I unexpectedly received a phone call from Dr. Chandra today. I thought the final pathology results would not be available until next week, but he was able to expedite the process.
The surgeons removed about a centimeter of the trigeminal nerve, and detailed analysis reveals microscopic tumor is present. The surgeons removed as much of the nerve as possible in the endoscope procedure, so further surgery will provide no additional benefit. Trying to remove the microscopic cancer cells surgically will be too risky, given the close proximity to my brain stem. Therefore, the most appropriate solution will be to pursue the most aggressive radiation or chemotherapy options available.
On the table for consideration over the next few weeks are gamma knife, proton therapy, and combined modality therapy. I’ll explain more about these options as we get into the decision making process in the near future. I’ll be meeting with all of the doctors from NMH and UoC again in order to get their opinions.

I’ll explain more about these options as we get into the decision making process in the near future. I’ll be meeting with all of the doctors from NMH and UoC again in order to get their opinions. I have to admit I wasn’t ready for this news. I really thought Dr. Chandra was calling me to setup a follow up appointment, since I expected no results until next week. However, I am more than equipped to handle this situation. It is time to suck it up and deal with what comes. The only pressure I feel is to make good decisions when its time to make them. I am confident that with the considerable resources at my disposal that we will find the most aggressive solution for this problem. After that, it’s time to close with adversity and destroy it.
At no point in this process is there room for anxiety or stress. You will never look back on a moment in your life and think “I’m really glad I stressed out about that situation/decision/scratch off card, I think it really helped”. That’s the challenge I propose to myself. I constantly assess which actions and attitudes I can display in the present that I will be retrospectively proud of in the future. Its the key overriding principle used in these situations.
We are focused, we are strong, we are prepared to do whatever it takes to win.

I know you will beat the hell out of it again! Your comments on stress are so true.
